Has Google's Hummingbird Update Harmed the Importance of Keywords?

Advancements in technology and the likes of Siri, Cortana and Alexa, voice search is now becoming many mobile users first choice for searching online. According to research, around 25% of searches are voice searches, showing the growing significance of mobile assistants.

Due to this shift in search patterns, it is becoming impossible for websites to ignore how this can effect Google rankings.

Search Engine Land point out in the article below how the recent Hummingbird update can aid the efficiency of voice search. This new update is allowing Google to have a better focus on the meaning behind  searches helping Google to go beyond finding pages with matching words.

Although this new update has sparked rumours among internet users that keywords are not important anymore - do not worry. Keywords are still very much a fundamental element of SEO. Carrying out keyword research and optimising pages for the best keywords is still one of the most important parts of SEO. Be sure to include relevant keywords and make sure they are best suited to your websites pages. In addition to this, updating your site to comply with the latest voice search trends will ensure you're ahead of the game!

“Conversational search” is one of the biggest examples Google gave. People, when speaking searches, may find it more useful to have a conversation. “What’s the closest place to buy the iPhone 5s to my home?” A traditional search engine might focus on finding matches for words — finding a page that says “buy” and “iPhone 5s,” for example.
